One great way is screen printing. Angry Chicken has a great link for easy screen printing. I loved screen printing in college and it a lot of fun and great way to create a unique design or pattern.
Another technique that is popular is freezer paper transfers.
Here is another freezer paper stencil tutorial, this one from Monday Prints using fabric dyes and paint for extra details.
